Where's that music coming from?

I honestly do not believe that anything in these modern times needs wires anymore. Of course there is the unfortunate reality of how electricity works, but we have the technology for anything beyond that to be wireless. One of the things thats always bugged me are stereo wires. Very little has been done in the way of speaker developement in the past fifty years, the 1950s era speakers i found on the street work the same way (and almost as well) as the speakers that came with my stereo.

I came across this article: How-To: Build Wireless Speakers from RF Headphones, which seemed like a fun project (to me at least). But it seemed silly to make them and put them in that ugly plastic box. Besides, if I'm listening to squarish looking speakers like that, theyre probably sitting on something, like a desk, where they could just as well have a wire.

Then I started thinking that there are probably places I would like to listen to music that arent very conducive to wires. I have a loft bed, and my stereo is across the room, so the first thing that i thought of was that I'd like some speakers near (or on) my bed. So...

I started with these RCA wireless headphones, on sale (because they were in an opened package at best buy).

and a pillow like this (mine has a white corderoy cover on it instead but i think it has the same weird swedish name)

I pulled apart the headphones, which conveniently leave you with two perfectly round ear pods. To do this I primarily used a screwdriver, and just popping thing out with a knife, but i did give in and chop at a piece of it with the trusty dremmel. There is a wire that runs across the top that connects the two, I was careful not to cut that.

I open up the battery side and took a look at it. Its real simple in there. I busted out the soldering iron and the wire and gave the battery leads some extra line. The rest looked okay for my purposes.

I took the cover off the pillow and traced around the earpods. I cut two holes about a 1/4 inch smaller than the outline, since the pods have a divet around the edge that will help keep them in place. Watch out with whats in the pillow. I didnt know mine was filled with goose down and it was pretty aggressive about popping out at me. I wiggled the earpods into the holes and tried to keep as many feathers in there as possible. Then I did a janky-but-sufficient sewing job to try and keep them in place.

I put the cover back on the pillow and arranged the tiny circut board containing the on switch, led, and charge jack at the bottom of the zipper for easy access. Turned on, tested, and tada! I have a wireless speaker throw pillow for the loft. Why? Why not?

The sound, as you might guess, is not as loud as a speaker, but honestly I was quite surprised at the volume and quality. Certainly good enough to fall asleep to.
