Technology, On One Hand...

This is dangerous information for a bored and unemployed techie...

One small step for hand... If my housemates ever remembered to lock the door, I might be tempted to RFID myself to open it.

I think its funny that in all this tech stuff its always like"'Yeah its awesome, we're just worried about someone unplugging the computer."

Back in November I went to listen to Clay Shirky talk about social software and category definitions over time. Lots about folksonomy and bottom up hierarchy models. In the very first five minutes though, he reminded everyone that even if your personal computer were perfectly preserved for the next 500 years, the owners of said computer would probably be hard pressed to find a 120v source of electricity 500 years from now.

It was brought up in my tour of the computer history museum as well. They had a few rooms where they had tried to get old systems working again. They had one of the first computer games up and running - spacewar, I think. The one that took up half the room and was displayed on one of those radar screens from the 50s. The curator who gave me the tour exlplained how ridiculous it was to just get everything connected the right way and powered up.

Clay Shirky just left it at that though, mentioned it and went on. It seems like a big thing to ignore dontcha think? And its one of those things that makes me sad that I spend so much of my days staring at something that doesnt exist without electricity. And as for the internet, does it exist at all? Mwah hahaha!
