Big Brother is Googling

My web life and internet life ar colliding more often now. Everytime I go out lately I run into someone from My Internet Life. With the possibility of this job (second interview on monday by the way!) I am forced to confront the issue of How Much of my Life I want to be Publicly Accessable. The map on my new blog site gives you the exact coordinates of my physical computer if I am logged onto a network. At this point its an excuse to use a bit of technology that i am facinated by, while poking fun at how people are starting to use the web. But yes, its creepy as hell.

I've always been a big fan of transparency, in friendships and relationships and business, and in fact thats one of the things that I like about this company that I'm trying to get a job at. But what is happening in the business world, what google and friendster, and myspace have done to the business world is a little alarming on a personal level.

There have been a bunch of articles recently about googling and googles refusal to turn over their search engine data to the government (of course in the name of "national security"). The point being made by most is that its essentially not a big deal, since most of it is just an anonymous log of searches. The counterpoint being made is 'where does it stop'. I think everyone has searched for something that they are maybe not so proud of.

The thing I love about blogging and internet life in general right now is the accounts of truly personal experiences and I am taking that away if I start editing based on what people (or employers) might be reading. I'm still juggling it and it might not be something that gets resolved at all.
